UPDATE Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR) is renewing its call for harsher legal penalties against individuals who sabotage telecommunications infrastructure following a spike in vandalism targeting its network in Missouri. In a press release issued Monday, Charter described the recent acts of vandalism as “domestic terrorism,” a term typically reserved for incidents involving violence or property destruction driven by political or religious motives.
While law enforcement has not used that designation, Charter’s use of the term is aimed at building public and political momentum for stricter laws that would impose stiffer criminal penalties on those who intentionally damage telecom infrastructure, two sources told The Desk.
Earlier this month, Charter also labeled a similar vandalism spree in Van Nuys, CA as “domestic terrorism,” Inside Towers reported. That incident disrupted services for homes, businesses, and emergency responders.
