Verizon Hit by Data Breach

Another day, another data breach. Verizon has reported that the personal data of more than 63,000 of its employees has been caught up in a data breach. Only this time the breach, which occurred last September and was discovered in December, was not due to a hack, but rather a faux pas of a fellow staff member, according to Broadband Communities.

The information contained in the file, which was released “inadvertently, may include name, address, Social Security number or other national identifier, gender, union affiliation, date of birth, and compensation information,” according to Verizon’s letter to affected users.

“[On Sept. 21], a Verizon employee obtained a file containing certain employee personal information without authorization and in violation of company policy,” explained Verizon in a sample letter to victims filed with the Maine attorney general’s office. “Promptly after learning of the issue [on Dec. 12], we conducted a review. […] At this time, we have no evidence that this information has been misused or shared outside of Verizon as a result of this issue.”
